Alvaro Montoya was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1985 to Cuban parents. He is the first Cuban American to play in the National Hockey League. He was drafted by the Florida Panthers in 2014 for two years.
He is currently the professional ice hockey goaltender for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played for the Phoenix Coyotes, New York Islanders, Winnipeg Jets, and Montreal Canadians.
